How to Make a Rain Garden Step by Step

Several locations disqualify themselves regardless of distance. Princeton Hydro advises against placing a rain garden over a septic tank or underground utility lines, against siting it inside the drip line of any tree you want to keep, and against choosing ground that is already wet from high groundwater or from water arriving off another area, since an already-saturated site cannot infiltrate anything new.

Wet ground that stays wet is a different problem with a different fix. Chronic saturation across a whole yard calls for drainage solutions that move water off the property, and a rain garden placed in that water only relocates the puddle.

A location that clears every one of those constraints still has to pass a soil test before anything gets dug.

Sites that fail outright are still fixable, just not with this tool. Where infiltration is genuinely absent, French drains and dry creek beds carry water away instead of asking the soil to absorb it.

A slow result does not automatically mean failure, and that distinction matters most on clay.

Whole-yard clay problems run past what one basin can absorb. Where the lawn itself stays saturated, yard drainage work comes first and the garden goes in afterward.

Will Water Drain Through Clay Soil?
